Concrete reinforcement design and manufacturing technology has just rolled forward...

Imagine a software design system which takes your intended slab or floor shape, applies all stress calculations, presents a contour loading map on screen, determines the precise reinforcement requirements - showing the right size bars, at the right length, exactly where they are needed, in both directions. Now imagine a machine which produces the finished steel mat, with every bar correctly positioned to meet your design criteria, then rolls it up so it can be laid just like a carpet on the site.

This new technology from HY-TEN gives designers and consulting engineers a more efficient way of preparing reinforcement drawings for concrete construction than has ever been possible before.

And it is not only layout planning which is simplified by the system. Because the final steel layout is also manufactured directly from your downloaded data, the reinforcement is supplied completely bespoke, as a made-to-measure product meeting the loading characteristics of your building design. As the appropriate steel is positioned only where it is needed, less material is used overall - and you reduce the costs.

The contractor also saves money by the ease with which the reinforcement can be laid. Each layer of steel is delivered as a roll, one for each direction, with spot welded steel straps locating the bars in their correct pre-spaced positions. Unrolling the carpets of reinforcement onto the formwork is thus a quick and straightforward task which improves construction times significantly. Even when precast concrete floor elements are being used, a rolled carpet can be used for the upper layer.


In the past...

Finding a more economical way for the design and placement of concrete slab reinforcement than the traditional methods is long overdue in the construction industry.

For too long, the old methods have led to substantial quantities of steel being placed in areas where it is unnecessary in order to satisfy highest loading conditions in particular sections of a slab. Wastage caused by cutting and overlapping sheets of fabric has added further to the costs.


The new way...

Now, based on the loading contour map from given design criteria, the BAMTEC® system from HY-TEN is able to calculate the required reinforcement in both directions and for the upper and lower layers, separately. By interactively splitting up a slab area into as few as possible carpet sections, the system then automatically identifies the diameter, position, length and spacing of every single bar in the carpet.

This data forms the instructions by which the reinforcement fabrication equipment produces the rolls of material for transportation to the site, where it is placed and rolled out without the need for support stanchions and cross beams required for standard mesh panels. Carpet rolls of up to 15m width and in excess of 20m length can be produced.

Fixing plans are generated for each carpet to define the precise placement, fitting and overall layout and bar position of the reinforcement. Site engineers are thereby able to ascertain all relevant information in advance of fixing the steel in position.


Costs reduced...

New technology from HY-TEN is now able to give you savings in virtually every aspect of your building and civil engineering projects containing slab-type components.

From the point at which the process starts in the Finite Element calculation and integration with the CAD system to produce an orthogonal reinforcement network diagram, savings are being made. Automatic production of the reinforcement carpet detailed by the system, together with all vital dimensions and installation instructions, adds to the savings.

Downloading data to HY-TEN's automated fabrication equipment from the design office, either by a direct on-line modem link or by disk, further reduces costs and helps to avoid errors. You also have the assurance that the endproduct will conform absolutely with your finalised design. What is more, the fabrication cannot be delayed by adverse weather conditions and quality in production is ensured by the computer-controlled machinery.

Then, there are the exceptional savings arising from the reduction in steel used by the sophisticated design system. Wastage and unnecessary steel is eliminated completely, leading to potential material cost savings of up to 50%.

More savings can be made at the installation stage because, in most cases, just two workers will be suffizient to position and roll out the reinforcement carpet. lt is possible to achieve installation time savings of up to 90% when compared with traditional fixing methods of bar and mesh.

Moreover, the inherent dimensional accuracy of the supplied product, which is also maintained during the concrete pouring stage due to the spot welded strapping technique employed, means lower inspection and quality control costs at the site.
